Hackmanite has the property of changing color to a deep pink when exposed to black light or ultraviolet light. This phenomenon is called photochromism (tenebresence), and occurs when the sulfur molecules contained in the stone change when exposed to light. The color continues to change not only while exposed to ultraviolet light, but for a while, and then slowly returns to its original color. It is a rare variety of sodalite, and is produced in small quantities.
